Influential Directors

I have created a spider diagram with all the directors that are influential to me for lots of different reasons. Some because of the challenges that they have faced in their life to get where they are now or because of how the films they created are great films that I am very interested in learning about how they were created. I have highlighted the different directors and then the different films that they directed. I decided to make my final speech on Robert Zemeckis because I was intrigued to learn about how he became successful and his story behind this influenced me to never give up even when things don't always work out.

Robert Zemeckis

Robert Zemeckis was born on May 14th 1952 in Chicago. He attended a roman catholic school and Fenger academy high school, and he said that in his family there was no art, no music, no books and no theatre, and the only thing that was inspirational was television. As a child, he enjoyed television and was interested in his parent’s camera. He filmed birthdays and holidays and then he started making his own films with his friends which included special effects. He believed that television saved his life as he learnt about the world outside of his own life. He was influenced by the programme Bonnie and Clyde which is what made him want to go to film school. His parents didn't like the idea because they thought due to where he was bought up they thought it would be impossible for him to become a director. He applied to University of southern California’s school of cinematic arts and had created a music video based on a Beatle's song and an essay that he wrote. He didn't hear from the university so he phoned them and he was rejected because of his average grades. He tried to persuade them by saying he would go to summer school to improve his grades. The school eventually accepted him. The classes were difficult as the teachers kept reinforcing how hard it was to go into the movie industry. However, this did not bother him as he was highly motivated. He became close friends with Bob Gale as they were both interested in James bond and Walt Disney whereas other students were interested in French new wave. He graduated from USC in 1973.

He won a student academy award at USC for his film called A field of honor, which is when he met Steven Spielberg who is very successful in the film industry.  Zemeckis showed him the film and Spielberg said that it 'was spectacular, with police cars and a riot'. Spielberg then became his mentor and executive produced his first two films which zemeckis co-wrote with Bob Gale.

His first two films were commercial failures I wanna hold your hand and Used cars. Him and Gale wrote the Spielberg directed 1941 film which then gave them the reputation for writing great scripts but didn't translate into movies that people wanted to see.

In the 1980's he found it difficult to get a job due to his reputation but was kept busy as he and Gale wrote scripts for other directors, car pool and Growing up but both never ended up being made. The now back to the future film was turned down by all the major studios, which lead to him jobless. He was then hired by Michael Douglas in 1984 to film Romancing the stone. The film was expected to fail which lead to Zemeckis being fired, but actually became a success.

After the success of this film he was now able to film Back to the future which was released in 1985 became very successful which lead to another two sequels in 1989 and 1990. He then collaborated with Disney and directed Who framed Roger rabbit, which included both traditional animation and live action. It cost $70 million to make which was one of the most expensive films to be made up to this point, but ended up winning three academy awards.

In 1992 he directed Death becomes her, and in 1994 he directed Forrest Gump which was his most commercial successes. It became the top grossing U.S film of 1994, and won six academy awards which included Best director. In 1996 he started the project of The castaway, Tom hanks who was the main character had to lose weight for the film so Zemeckis decided that the way to keep the same crew was to film what lies beneath in between. He shot some parts of both the films in 1999 and completed now called Cast away in early 2000. He said that he wouldn't recommend shooting two films back to back but both films ended up being successful but with cast away making $70 million more than What lies beneath.

In 2004 he joined tom hanks to direct The polar express, they had to use the computer animation technique where the movements of the actors had to be captured digitally and used as the basis for the animated characters. This was the first major computer animated film and the new York times said 'whatever critics and audiences make of this movie, from a technical perspective it could mark a turning point in the gradual transition from and analog to a digital cinema'.

In February 2007 Zemeckis and the chairman of Walt Disney Dick cook made plans for a new performance capture film company called ImageMovers digital. The company created films using the capture technology, while zemeckis was the director of most of the films Disney marketed the films worldwide. He used the same technology again to create Beowulf.

In July 2007 zemeckis announced that he had written a screenplay for A Christmas carol. The film started production in 2008 and was released in 2009 which had mixed reviews. In 2010 Disney announced that they were no longer working with ImagesMovers Digital. The studio's last film called Mars needs moms was the second worst box office failure in history. Zemeckis made his return to action films and in2012 Flight was brought out by Paramount.

In January 2014 it was announced that Back to the future would be taken to the stage, and the show will be co-written by the original writers which was Zemeckis and Gale. A year later he directed the film The walk which was based on a true story. In 2015 Paramount pictures and 20th century fox announced that he would direct the film Allied and that was released in 2016.

Speech On Robert Zemeckis

My final speech was on Robert Zemeckis which I found very interesting to talk about in my speech.I did lots of research about his past life, what films he directed, how he became famous and successful, and what he is going to do in the future. I found the speech easy to talk about because of how famous he is and the amount of films that he directed there was lots of information about him. I inserted some pictures throughout the speech using Premiere Pro so that the speech was more interesting.

Hover-Board

As part of this project I had to learn how to edit on Premiere pro as it was my first time using this programme. We got the video footage from the adobe tutorial for beginners and downloaded it. After getting the different bins I opened up the first video and learnt how to crop the video down to the length I wanted. To do this I used the 'i' button where I wanted the video to start, and the 'o' button where I wanted the video clip to end. Using the keypad arrows left and right I moved between frames to get an accurate point to where I wanted the video to start and finish. I dragged the clip down into the timeline which is where all the edited clips go to make the final video. I then clicked on the other video footage and made them all the length that I wanted them to be and continued to drag them into the timeline next to the previous video. When I had added all the video footage I wanted I went onto the audio bin and dragged it into the timeline underneath all the clips so the audio plays whilst the video is playing. At the end of the video I included my name by clicking on title then new title then default still. I typed in my name in a text box, which automatically saves in the video footage bin. I dragged that in to the end of my video and shortened it down to a few seconds. I then went to the beginning of the whole video and pressed 'i' then 'o' at the end of the video, I then exported video.

Media

In the last week I have used social media which includes, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter. I have chosen to use social media so I can find out about other peoples live and what they have been up to, and finding out about things that are going on all around the world. I also use it to keep in contact with friends and family on a daily basis.

I have also watched films like the bee movie and toy story because I enjoy watching films as I find it relaxing and it keeps me occupied when I have nothing else to do.

I have the radio on at home all the time because I don't like it being silent in the house. I also like the music that is played and the news and weather forecast that they do often so I can find out about any important things that are going on in the world.

I enjoy playing games on my phone as they keep me occupied when I am out like in the car or waiting for someone as it passes the time quicker and gives me something to do.

I enjoy watching television and Netflix as they have lots of great programmes I enjoy watching them because they are very interesting and can be very intense which I love.

I have read the newspaper within the last week to find out what is going on in the world, I enjoy reading the newspaper as it is bigger then reading the news on my phone.

Media influencing people to commit crime:

Anders Behring Breivik shot 68 people dead at a youth camp of the Norwegian Labor party, another nine in a bombing of government buildings According to the judgment rendered against him, he liked playing violent games. He actually used the video game Call of Duty to train for his shooting massacre.

Michael Carneal shot girls as they prayed in a prayer group. Carneal never moved his feet during his shootings, and never fired far to the left or right, but instead fired only once at each target that appeared, just as a player of video games maximizes his game score by shooting only once at each victim, in order to hit as many targets as possible.

Jeff Weise, a 16-year-old, shot dead nine people at and near his high school in Red Lake, Minnesota, had an obsession with violent animation.

Nehemiah Griego, killed five, including his mother, father and his three younger siblings. He loved playing violent video games and even enjoyed talking about them to crime investigators.

camera movement

pan- the camera stays in the same place but moves from left to right

crab- the camera moves forward and backwards

track- movement which is parallel to the action

zoom- the camera is getting closer or further away from the subject

pedestal- moving the camera vertically with respect to the subject

tilt- the camera stays in the same position but rotates up and down

Evaluation

Yes I have managed to reach the deadline, by assigning everyone with a different section. The one thing that could have stopped me from reaching my deadline is time management as it took us a long time to edit the clips. Elements that I found easiest included setting up the equipment as I have had a lot of practice of this now. I found it difficult to edit the clips as we had a lot of problems with the software as we haven't had much experience of using it. I worked with Zoe, Alexis, and Peter. We worked well in a team as we all participated and helped each other to get the work done.

Pattern

 Deadpool trailer mash up

I used Premier pro to make this trailer and used clips from the films called the rise of the planets of the apes, deadpool and The wolverine origin. I used the sounds mostly from Planet of the apes, but used the sounds from deadpool at the beginning. I used clips from all of the films, but made the trailer seem more of a tense film rather than being more of a comedy. I matched the clips up with the sounds so it made it fit together into a realistic trailer. I used a lot of fighting clips from The wolverine as there was a lot of  action going on and used a mix of deadpool and planet of the apes for the fight scene on the bridge. At the beginning it was a mix of all three of the films as in all the films they were doing experiments which meant that the films linked together nicely. I think that I have had an equal amount of mix between the 3 different clips, which meant that the overall trailer had a change of genre and was presented in a more of an action based film rather than being more comedic which is what the original deadpool trailer is like. I learnt how to cut the original clips and use sounds from other clips to make the trailer that I wanted. I learnt how to use the different tools to make the sound stay in sync with the picture which I found quite challenging because the picture and the sound came from different clips it was difficult to make it fit together to make it seem like a normal trailer.

Carbon Copy

Adele- Hello

1) strengths- There is only one person in the video so it makes it more achievable to replicate the same shots,

weaknesses-the setting of the video will be difficult to replicate as some of it is based in a house

opportunities- I will be able to show my editing skills by making the video a different colour, I will be able to show how I can change the focus on the camera when filming, and show how I can film shots from different lengths and angles

threats- There is a lot of focus on detail which will be difficult to replicate,

Pretty little liar Bonus scene Mona and Alison-

2)strengths-  different effects are used like showing a part of it in reverse and doing shots in slow motion, having voice overs, and overlapping clips, there is only two people in the video so it will again be quite easy to be able to copy the original clip,

weaknesses-  there are too many different effects, and it is quite a long clip

opportunities- I can show the skills that I have because there are so many different effects used

threats- some parts are filmed in a prison cell which will be difficult to copy, because there are so many different effects it could be difficult to edit

Ed Sheeran- Castle on the hill

3)strengths- There is a range of long and short shots and are achievable to replicate with the equipment and surroundings that we have to use, it is mostly based in a field with shots switching between short and long,

weaknesses- it will be difficult to get exactly the same setting as in the actual video

opportunities- because of the range of shots it will clearly show the skills that I have, because of the music I can edit the video and put the music over the top

threats-There aren't any different effects on the video so it could be too basic

I decided to replicate the pretty little liar bonus scene with Mona and Alison because I think that even though it is the most challenging video because of the different effects I think it is a good opportunity to show what editing and filming skills I have. Also, because there aren't too many characters it will be easier to film and event though the setting isn't going to be exactly identical, I am still able to make it as identical as possible with the facilities that I have.

Evaluation

I am very pleased with how my final video came out. The research technique that I used was looking at different videos on youtube until I had an idea of what I should do. When I had chosen the clips I then edited them together and that was the final mash-up video. I am glad with how it came out because I didn't just mix up the clips I mixed up the sounds as well so that it made it more in sync and make the video look more like a real trailer. If i din't do this then the sounds would not fit together making it obvious that the clips are from different films.

Overall, I think that the final video was good and I would like to improve on my editing skills so that I can improve my knowledge on premiere pro, because I only used the basics when editing these clips.

TEST SHOTS

My Final Piece

Using my test shots I knew what I had to do to improve to make my clips as similar to the original clip as possible. I knew that I had to make sure to have the clips only as head shots. After the test shots I wrote down all the different shots that I had to film and how to film them and what Alexis had to do to make it identical. After I wrote this down which is shown above I wrote all the timings so that I knew roughly how long I had to film for. I then filmed all the shots making sure that each one I left a few seconds either side of the clip to make sure that I didn't cut any important footage out. I filmed each shot a number of times to make sure that it was as good as it could be. For two of the shots where it is a landscape shot I filmed them for a few minutes as they had to be quite a long time around 15-20 seconds so to make sure that I had good footage for a solid 20 seconds I filmed for a long time. I then used premiere pro to edit the clips together, I chose the best clips and put them all in the correct order, making sure that they were roughly the correct lengths. After, I played around with the colour of the shots to try and get it as similar to hers. I watched some youtube videos to see how to get a sepia colour and then I changed it to make myself to get the right colour. After I got the colour I liked then I repeated it with all the other clips. With some of the clips they were supposed to be blurry which instead of doing on the camera I decided to do it on the program. I then made some of the areas blurry using an effect. I made it possible for the blurriness to increase and decrease when I wanted which is what happens in the original. When I was happy with how it looked I overlayed the original clip and sound in the corner and watched them both at the same time which then meant that I was able to make a more accurate edit of the clips so that they were as similar as possible. I made sure that the sounds were in sync and that the clips were exactly the same lengths.  I had then finished the final carbon copy video.

I am pleased with how the video turned out mostly as the sounds are in sync and the pictures are quite accurate as well. I found it difficult to sync the sounds up because of the pauses are not exactly the same and Alexis didn't say the words at exactly the same pace, but after editing them I think that they are very similar. The colour is quite similar but to improve I could have played around more with the colour to make it more similar. I think that I could have made it a darker background so that more of the focus is on Alexis rather than the setting. Although I think that the different shots could have been improved as they are not as identical as I wanted them to be at some points they are not completely the same. For example, at some points I needed to make the camera closer to her as the shots were too far away. I think that if I had more time I could have made it a bit longer by doing more shots, but I think that with the resources we had the different settings are not exactly the same but you can tell what it is supposed to look like. I had to speed up some of the shots and slow some down to make the movements be in sync which I think was quite successful in the end. If I had more experience on the camera then I could have made the focus change on the camera rather then on the software, as it would have been more accurate. Overall, I think that the clips are not identical due to the colour, some of the camera shots are not exactly the same distance away as they should be and because of the settings. But I think that with the resources we had that it was similar because of the sync of sounds and the clips are exactly the same length as the original.
