Preparing for Progression
Identify strengths you believe you have and others have identified about you
I feel as though over the past two years at college I have improved and developed my skills which I am going to take with me in the future. I am going to highlight the strengths that I believe I have in myself and then get feedback from my peers to see what they think my strengths are.

Editing- I believe that editing is one of my main strengths that I have. From the start of the course I have used Premiere Pro so I have a lot of experience using the software. Looking back at my previous work you can see the improvement I have made within the editing my videos. I am a lot more familiar now with the software, especially recently I feel as though this is what I have been excelling in the most.
Researching- In every unit that I have completed at college I have had to do lots of research before actually creating the video. From doing this in every assignment I am now very confident in what I need to do and do not need any guidance into what I have to do. I feel that this is a skill of mine as I now know the process that I have to do to get to the filming of the video and the development of my idea to get to the filming stage. In my recent project I feel as though I have excelled myself the most in this. I have realised the importance of researching and how much of an impact that it has on the outcome of the video.
Audio- When editing projects audio plays a big part in this and I feel as though this is one of my strengths. Before completing unit 5 the level of knowledge I had on audio was limited but since that assignment I have learnt about the importance of it. I am now able to use audition to edit sounds that I need as well as learning about Foley and practiced my own recordings has been a huge help to me. I now feel as though editing audio and sound effects are a strength of mine and that I have definitely excelled myself within this aspect.
Colour Grading- I feel as though colour grading has been a more recent improvement of mine, which I knew nothing about before the second year of this course. I have learnt about the significance of colour grading and how doing so gives it a more professional look. I believe that this is a strength of mine now as I am confident in colour grading my work to make it look a certain way to give off the mood that I am trying to convey.
Planning- planning is a very important part of the process which I feel as though I have improved in doing over the time at college. It has been a focus of mine to improve in this and feel as though I have successful done so. I enjoy storyboarding and showing the development and progression of my idea.

I have left a comment section which is where my peers are going to identify my strengths
Explain your ambitions for the future- what is you career aim? Create a detailed 5 year plan showing what you intend to do
Year 1- After finishing my college course I am planning to start an apprenticeship within the media industry. I am pretty open minded about which one, possibly digital marketing or something similar to do with this. I will hopefully get a one or two year apprenticeship and will start it preferable when I finish college or in september at the start of the academic year.
Year 2- I will hopefully still be continuing the apprentiship as the majority of them are roughly two years. Hopefully by this time I will be learning more about what it is like to be in the working environment and will be successful in my apprenticeship by gaining the qualification within the field.
Year 3- After completing the apprenticeship I will have hopefully secured a job at the same business and will continue on with the same job but will have gained a qualification due to the previous apprenticeship.
Year 4- At this point I will hopefuly be working in the business hopefully as a digital marketer or within a similar field.
Year 5- By this point I hopefully would have secured a good living and will be on my way to working my way up in the business whilst still learning more about the trade.
Evaluate these strengths for how they will support you reaching your ambitions and where are you shortfalls

How will my strengths help support my ambitions?
The strengths that I have outlined earlier are all strengths which I feel in effect that can help with my future ambitions as it shows what I am able to bring to the business. The work that I have done at college is going to help me when applying for a job as I can create a portfoilo and a showreel to show all the work that I have done. The strengths have helped improve many of my skills like my editing skills which I feel as though is going to benefit me when getting a job or apprenticeship. The softwares that I have exprience in is also a strength that I can bring to the job like premiere pro and my editing skills within this software.

What are my weaknesses?
Initial Ideas- I always struggle for inspiration for my storylines when trying to create a short film or any video at the beginning of every assissignment given. Once I have an idea I am able to progress and develop it but the majority of the time I struggle for the initial idea.
Screen Writing- this has never really been a main enjoyment or focus of mine and I have tended to steer away from these types of videos. In both my FMP's when I have been given the opportunity to create my own type of video I have always tended to steer away from the idea of screen writing due this bein a struggle of mine.
To reach your ambitions explain what you will need to do to move in this direction? You need to give illustrative examples of where you will go, what you will learn and how this would benefit you.
To reach my ambitions in life as said in my 5 year plan I am going to get an apprenticeship within the media industry, which is going to be the start for me to reaching my goals.I plan on using the skills and knowledge that I gain through the apprenticeship to help secure a job placement either at the same company or start at a different place. By this point I would have obtained a qualification due to the apprenticeship and will be able to find another job within the industry relatively easy due to the knowledge and experience I am going to have had.
During the apprenticeship I am going to learn lot about the industry and I feel as though this is the direction that I need to move to so that I can secure a reasonable job within the media industry. I am going to have the opportunity to learn lots and gain the working experience which is why I chose this option rather than going to university as I feel as though it is going to benefit me more by being able to be in a work environment.
List your work experience opportunities and how you have been able to achieve your goal of 350 hours. Evaluate what you have learned from this process.
As part of my work experience I was able to use my part time job to cover my hours needed. This was working in a cafe which doesn't have any relevance to my future career. However, it gave me the chance to focus more on my studies at college. However working here I was able to run the social media pages that the cafe has like facebook and instagram. I was able to take professional photos to upload to the various websites to market the business. This helped me with my photography and marketing skills which I can take with me in future jobs and has given me an insight into the working environment. When I had more time to hand I was given the opportunity to start on the DHA planning project which essentially was a video for a company which was to promote the land that they owned so that they could sell it to other businesses. This is still ongoing and does not count as any of my hours but it was a good opportunity for me to get work experience in the media sector. At this moment we have been in the planning process of it which included going to a meeting to find out the visions of the outcome of the video. We are now preparing a presentation of our ideas so that we can show the company and get ready for the filming part of the process. So far this has given me an insight into the industry and given me an opportunity to use my creative skills in an important project.

Critically evaluate the various ways you can apply for a course or job in the media industry
Internships/apprenticeships- To get into the media industry it is important to have experience as it makes you more employable. Getting an internship or apprenticeship is really good way to get the working experience as well as earning money.
University- this is a very popular option as it gives you the chance to get a degree within the specific subject that you are interested in. Even though it gives you the opportunity to learn the skills and get the qualification that you need it is also very expensive and doesn't give you much of the working environment.
Job Websites- like indeed or total jobs are good popular websites to get jobs into. This is the most obvious approach and an easy one to find due to the high volume of jobs within the media industry. It would be difficult as a college leaver to get a job immediately due to lack of experience which is why other options I feel are better.
Explain the type of knowledge you require when applying for any kind of course or job
Different jobs and companies require different skills depending on the role of the job. I am going to find a few examples of jobs online to see what the requirements are.

This is an advert that I found online by simply typing in video editor jobs as this is a very obvious job that is linked to media.
The first thing that stands out to me in the first sentence is the work 'experience in video editing' this shows already that you need to have experience within the industry so they are clearly looking for someone who has gone to university and got a qualification or have worked in a similar field.
The role requires to have good knowledge of the Adobe software especially Premiere Pro, as well as an understanding of Audition, After Effects, Photoshop and Illustrator. Clearly they are looking for someone with lots of experience in this field and I would imagine someone with 3-5 years experience in the field.
The job will include creating visually creative concepts, being able to manage multiple projects at once, being confident and work effective with a team and alone and to help produce new ideas. This makes it clear to me that you have to be able to have lots of knowledge and skills to be able to do this job as well as indicating the amount of experience you need in the media field. These are the big factors that I am seeing from this job application which has shown me the type of knowledge they require which I am not qualified for this job but it could have been a job for me in the future due to the career I want to go down.

This is another job vacancy that I found on a job website. This again immediately shows that you need to have experience in managing digital content. The skills required for this job it to have experience in using digital channels as well have paid campaign knowledge. This job is clearly for someone at a high level due to it being a manager level job. This type of job is of interest to me as it as it has a clear link into the media industry. I feel as though going to university to gain the qualifications is necessary to get this job due to the level of experience they are wanting. This is the thing that stands out to me the most and I feel as though that they are expecting to have at least 5 years experience in the industry.

This is the last job that I found which is another video editor job. The job description says that they will be producing content and premier video promo's for leading brands. They are looking for someone with a creative approach to editing and have good editing techniques. They will be inspiring the video team with creative visions and ideas showing to me they someone with a creative mind and background. They want and expert in using Adobe premiere pro and after effects as well as colour grading. All of which I have the basic knowledge of and if I went on to university I am sure that I would learn more about each of these, giving me the platform to progress on to become a video editor. This is of course a possibility to me but due to not wanting to go to university this job would not be of interest to me in the future. They also want experience in storyboarding, scriptwriting, camera operation and directing. This shows they are wanting a professional with a lot experience and background knowledge within this sector.
Explain the best methods of application for the various milestones identified in task 1
The best way to apply for my the milestones that I want to reach which I have identified in task 1 is by going on apprenticeship websites like Kent training apprenticeships, and the gov website. I feel like these websites are ones that I going to give me easy access to lots of apprenticeships that I want to do. I can also send emails to other companies that I am interested in working with to see if they have any positions available. Compared to other applications like going on job websites like indeed are not the best way of application for me as they are more focused on jobs rather than apprenticeships which is why I think websites which are specifically for apprenticeships are best for me.
Showreel or Portfolio (including work experience project)
This is my showreel that I created which shows all the work that I have done this year. I have showed the process that I have had to do to create the video, as well as including snap shots of the final outcome of my work. I have also mentioned the different units that it was focusing on and the different editing software that I used to show off my skills. Now that I have created this showreel I am able to send this to possible employers so that they get an idea of the work that I have been doing and the skills that I have gained throughout college.
