What is AR and how can AR be used in the industry?

Augmented reality is when you use devices to see computer-generated objects in the real environment. An example of this is pokemon go as you use your camera on the app and are able to see different computer objects that appear to be in real life as it enhances your current perception of reality. You are also able to use this on products, and if you scan them then it appears that different information is coming out of the product. At first augmented reality was just used in entertainment and game businesses but now it is becoming more popular in everyday life and now it is used by many people to entertain, educate and knowledge sharing. AR can be used in the industry to also manage the information flood and organising distant meetings.

How is it different to VR?

It is different to VR as virtual reality is where it is a complete immersion experience where none of the real world is involved. It makes you imagine that you are somewhere else like on a roller coaster for example. AR is where graphics are seen to be in the real environment, but VR is where it is completely an imaginary experience and there is no involvement of the real world is there. VR is used mostly used for entertainment as it gives a experience that makes you feel like you are somewhere else, whereas AR you are seeing computer-generated objects whilst also seeing real life.

What is interactive media?

Interactive media is where the user decides on the input which decides on how the output will turn out. Websites and video games are common types of interactive media. Video games for example have controllers which the user decides how they use it which is the input and the output is the thing on the screen doing what it has been programmed to do by the user. Social networking websites have graphics and text which allows the users to share photos and chat with friends which means that the user can choose what they want to happen and because it is computer programmed it will happen. This means that the users are able to choose the input which in turn affects the output. Other types of interactive media includes, text, moving image, animation, video, and audio.

What benefit does interactive media give the end user?

The benefit of interactive media to the user is that they are able to be in control and are able to decide what happens next. They are also able to share things on social media and are able to communicate with friends just from their device. Interactive media is normally very easy to use and the users are able to sense how to use the product.

Name

Using after effects I learnt how to animate words by using the different tools in photoshop. I am only able to do basic things on the programmes like understanding what the different effects are and how to do key frames so that I am able to make certain points. I would like to understand photoshop in more detail so that I am able to do different and more advanced effects on words.

MKC logo

I have now learnt how to make an image into different layers using photoshop and I then used my after effects skills to animate it. I had to make each letter into a separate layer so that I was able to animate them all individually. To do this I used the magic paint brush tool to click on the different letters to make them different layers. I then imported it onto after effects so that I could animate them. I used the opacity tool to make the logo slowly fade in. I then made it move of the screen to finish of the animation.

Lower third animation

I used photoshop again and created a textbox and changed the colour. I then added my name as a separate layer. Using after effects I then animated the text box and my name. I made the box slide onto the screen and then my name to appear. Even though this is a basic animation I am still learning new skills and becoming more confident with the programme.

After Effects Tutorial

I followed this tutorial and my outcome was quite similar to the actual tutorial, however mine paused for 1 or 2 seconds before the effect happens. It doesn't carry on like the tutorial so it doesn't look as good as that. I think that I made the freeze frame too long so that it pauses rather than just carrying on wit

Blippar

Blippar works when you scan your face so that it is saved so when someone else using the same app scans your face it will recognise that person and come up with their username. When you create a halo which is when someone scans your face it comes up with the image or video that they have used. When scanning someones face that is the trigger image and then once it is recognised it comes up with the overlay which then appears on the screen.

When I scanned this car advert it came up with the car and I was able to change the colour of it. I was also able to see a video about it and was also able to click a button to see more information about it. This company has done this so that you are able to see what colour car they sell and what one you should get. They also wanted to give you the opportunity to have access to more information about the car so that you are able to easily find out things from just the image. They made sure that you can also watch a video as it good at promoting the car and makes it more likely that you will buy the car.

When you scanned this image it came up with loads of spider webs over the top and then the name of the film came through. You was then able to take a photo as spider-man. The company did this because it is very interesting and exciting and will make people want to see the film. The company does this because it is a good advertising technique as they are able to see what the film is and when it is coming out.

HP Reveal

This is the image that I am going to use and when someone scans his face it will come up with Peter Penfold and sunglasses will appear on his face. This happens because his face is used as a barcode as there are lots of different points and when it is recognised it will then appear with the overlay.

My First Blipp- 706979

I then made the plan using blippar. I did this by inserting the image and simply adding a textbox and typing and then rotated the screen so that I could make it 3D. When finished I did a preview and then I typed the code above into my blippar app on my phone and was able to scan it and then his name appeared on the screen. If I tilted the phone sideways I could see that his name was 3D.

Blippar example using after effects- 707189

I got an image of google and saved it and then I got an image of a plane and using after effects I put the landscape and then I animated the plane to move across the screen. I then added it to adobe media encoder render After I had rended it I then was able to go onto the blippar on my computer and inserted this image on the left which is the n scanned it will appear with the overlay which is what I made in after effects. So then I uploaded the video and put it over the top so that when it is scanned it will moving across the screen.

Evaluation so far

So far I have learnt how to use blippar and how you need to have a trigger image, and then an overlay image appears. I have learnt how to use HP reveal and how that works. I then did my first Blipp so I learnt how to use the website to create my own trigger image and my own overlay. I then made another Blipp but used after effects before hand so that an image can move across the screen rather than just appear when it is scanned.

Final Idea

I have decided to go with the music album idea because I think that it will be the most interesting and will be the most successful idea. I am going to use Rihanna's album called anti as she is a very well-known artist and her songs are also very popular. Once its scanned I want a link to come up to take you to a list of all the songs and then you can hear a part of it. Then there will be a youtube video of some of the songs which they can watch. I will use blippar to create this as I will include links and images so that they can go to other social media places. The CD will be the trigger image and then the links and the images will be the overlay. I think that this would be good as people are able to see if they want to buy the CD. This could be good for sales as people are going to listen to the songs on their phone so they know what is on the CD. Having social media links it makes people stay interested and updated on new information. I think that this idea is better then the superdry logo because I think that it's more beneficial and easier to create. I also wouldn't know how to create the overlay and think that it is too difficult. I didn't choose the drinks logo because I think that it is too simple and I think that doing the music CD will show my skills more then doing the drinks logo.

Proposal

Product and target audience

The target audience will be older teenagers and young adults as these are the people that are the most experienced in using technology therefore more experience in Blippar. They will understand what to do more than older people. They will also be more likely to understand how to use the overlay and know what you can do. The target audience is also people who like listening to music because these are the people that are going to want the CD. This image below is a rough plan of what I want to happen. Once you have scanned the trigger image which is the CD it will then come up with a track list, music videos that are on the CD and social media links. I have then drawn arrows which explains what happens once you click each of the links.

Intended purpose of project

The purpose of this project is to persuade people to buy the CD. It is also there to make the CD more heard of and popular. By having social media links it is going to make the CD more known and will therefore in time increase the sales if people are staying up to date with news about it. By having extra videos it will also promote the music. Having a track list it means that people are easily able to access the music.

Summary of research

I did lots of research into Blippar and augmented reality before I started my own AR project. I firstly started by understanding what AR is and the details about it like why it is used and the difference between AR and VR. This was useful to understand the difference between them so I knew more about what my project was on. I then learnt the basic skills of after effects, blippar and HP reveal, and did simple tasks to grow my skills on this to help me with my own project. I then came up with my initial ideas using a mind map so that I could easily get all my ideas down. I then chose my top 3 and did a swot analysis, doing all of this research helped me with my final idea and to have a good understanding of the skills I have so that I could come up with the best possible final idea.

Initial ideas plan

I came up with lots of initial ideas of what my own AR project could be on. I thought of different trigger images and then what the overlay image could be or what could happen once its been scanned. My top 3 ideas would be to scan a branded product like the superdry logo and then it comes up with a colored top and then you are able to change the colour so that you can see what the other colours look like and there could be a link to the website. Another idea would be to scan a drinks logo and then it comes up with all the other products that the company has like coca cola owns lots of other drinks which could come up when you scan the logo. My final idea would be to scan a music album cover and then it comes up with a track list so that you can listen to a part of each song. There could also be music videos and social media links so that they can see if they want to buy that album.

SWOT analysis

Music album

Strengths-it is a good advertising technique so that when people scan the image they are able to hear what is on the album. This is good because then they are able to see if its an album that they want to buy. There will also be social media links so that more people will be updated with information about the album. Having music videos there also will make the audience more interested in the album.
Weaknesses- on other music sites you are able to hear parts of the song which is easier to get hold of rather than scanning the picture.
Opportunities- It will increase sales as people are more likely to buy it if they know the songs that are on there and it will become more popular because of the social media links
Threats- I am not too sure how I am going to be able to have the clips of the songs appear so I would have to do some research on this part.

Superdry logo

Strengths- you are able to change the colour of the top so that you can see what the top looks like in the different available colours. It will also be a good advertising technique as you are able to see what top you would get rather than going onto the website or going into the store.
Weaknesses- Because it is on a small screen it might be difficult to change the colour of the top.
Opportunities- It will possible increase sales as people are more likely to scan a photo rather than going into the store.
Threats- I am not too sure how I will be able to have the different colours there to choose from so I would have to do research so that I am able to do this.

Drinks logo

Strengths- By having the other drinks that coca cola own it will be good so that people know the other drinks that they do
Weaknesses- other than the other drinks appearing not much else is going to happen which could make it quite basic and boring
Opportunities- I will easily be able to make this work because I can put different images on the screen using after effects
Threats- it might not actually persuade people to try the other drinks

Final Idea Plan

After using Blippar and creating my own Blipps I have had to make some adjustments to my proposal so that I am able to create the blipp with the skills I have. I am going to have an image of the front cover of the CD which is called Anti and then I am going to have different images and links appear once it is scanned. I am going to have the Facebook link attached. to do this I am going to use the Facebook widget and then insert the website into the URL so that it makes the image into a link. I will then have a Spotify image appear which will be a link so that when you click it, it will take you over to the Spotify page with all the music. I will have a few music videos also on the page which I will get the URL from youtube. I will make all the links fade in so once it is first scanned the different images will appear, I am able to do this using Blippar. I will also have confetti continuously falling down the page which I will do on after effects and then insert the video over the top. This will make it a lot more interesting and will show my skills of using after effects rather than just including links and images. I will include information about the artist and have photos to make it informative to the audience so that they can learn new things.

Primary Research

If you saw that you could scan a CD would you go out of your way to do so?

Only 30% of people said that they would go out of their way to scan a CD, 30% saying maybe and 40% saying that they wouldn't. This shows due the range of responses that most people think very differently and even though there are more people who wouldn't, it is still very close. This might not neccesaily be because it is a Cd but because many people might not have the blipped app or are not really interested about AR. But I will still take this on board and try to make my AR as aesthetically pleasing so that more people are interested.

After scanning the CD do you think you will be more likely to buy it?

50% said maybe they would buy it, 30% saying yes, and 20% saying they wouldn't. This shows to me that depending on the music and if they like it then it will decide if they buy the CD or not. Therefore I am not surprised by these results as if the music is bad then they are not going to want to buy it.

What do you like about the idea?

Many people liked the idea that you can get information about the CD and that it will be useful. Other responses were that you can listen to previews of the songs and that it could increase sales of the product.

What don't you like about the idea?

Many of the responses were that CDs are not as popular nowadays because of music apps that give you the opportunity to listen to music for free. This was one of the main issues with this idea which I do understand and this will make it harder for the AR to be successful as it will only attract people that are still interested in CD's, but that doesn't mean that no one does buy them it just means that it is not as popular anymore.

Primary research

I did a questionnaire for my target audience which is teenagers and young adults to see if they thought that my plan was a good idea and if they would use it. By getting this information I was able to see if I needed to improve my idea and if something was important to add or remove. From my responses I have come to the following conclusions:

Do you think creating an AR project on a CD is a good idea?

Half the responses said that this was a good idea. 30% said that maybe it is a good idea and 20% thought that it was a bad idea. This shows that many people have a different opinion on this idea, which is means that when I create the blimp I have to make sure that it is very interesting and exciting to show that it is a good idea. I will have to make some adjustments to my plan to do so.

What would you like to see once you have scanned the CD?

I had many different responses from this which included finding out information about the artist. with photos as well, knowing the music that is on the CD and possibly including previews, and maybe a few music videos. These were the majority of the answers that I received.

Do you think including social media links is a good idea?

60% of people thought that it was a good idea to include social media links, 30% thought maybe leaving 10% thinking no. This shows to me that the majority of people thought that it was a good idea, 3 people were unsure and only 1 person thought that it wasn't, which proves to me that I should include this on my own project.

What album would you wanna to be used for the project?

There was a huge range in answers with this question but I did realise that many people named an album or artist that is very popular in the UK right now, proving to me that I might change my choice of CD to one of those more mainstream artists. other answers included musical albums and pink Floyd.

Secondary Research

For the information about the artist and album I decided to do research on the album to see how much money it is and the duration, genre, date that it was released. I then looked at more detailed information about what the album is about and Rihanna as an artist. Using this research I will use the following information on my own blipp.

I didn't want to include too much information as it could become boring and people might be put off by this, so I decided to only include the most relevant facts.

I then saved an image a house which I put in the corner of the screen. I then made it go to the home screen so that they can then click a different image to go to a different page.

Test logs

I started by creating confetti using Adobe after effects. I followed a tutorial as to how to create this but changed some of the settings to make it more suitable for my own project. The screen recording above shows how I created this effect. Once I had finished I rendered it so that I could use it to put over my trigger image.

I did lots of different screen recordings to show that my Blipp is working and to check to see if the buttons work. I showed how I uploaded music and how I created buttons. On the front page I added different images that are links to certain pages. I have made a social media page which has the links to all Rihanna's social media. I also have a link to her spotify so that you can listen to her music.

I then created an information page which has basic facts about the artist and the album. I got all this information from the secondary research that I did looking at different websites to find out the basic facts about the album and artistI also included a few images that you can look through to make it more interesting. I then had a little image of a house in the corner which takes you back to the home page.

I also included a track list which once you press it will take you to the page with all the names of the songs and a 15 second preview of each of the songs which you can listen to.

I then included a music video page which has a few of the music videos to the songs in the album, which once you click the link you can watch on youtube.

On the home page I have included a button so that you can buy the CD from HMV. Once you first scan the image the confetti effect that I made first appears which you can play. I have set up he different buttons for the pages to appear after 3 seconds by changing the opacity in after effects. I tested the different links to see if it all worked correctly. After completing the final blipp I tested it on my phone by typing in the code and when I scanned it, it worked. I was able to go onto the different pages that I created using the buttons and I was able to use the links or listen to the music or videos. I was then able to go back to the front page using the home button.

Evaluation

This is my final Blipp if you type in the code given above it will come up with all the information. I think that this has gone very successfully as I have included lots of information about the album and artist using my secondary research. I have shown my skills using after effects by creating the confetti. I have also given the links motion effects so that they fade in to make it more interesting. I have included lots of different buttons to take you to different pages and back to the home page. You are able to get onto the different social media and to watch some of the videos which is what the final plan was. I included a track list and you are able to listen to the different songs that are on the album, which is my main focus of the Blipp.

One thing that I would like to improve on is make the confetti more interesting by adding another effect to show the skills that I have. I think that I could have made some of the pages more interesting. On my information page I have included images to look through but I feel like I could have made some of the other pages better to show the skills I have with Blippar.

The research I did was very different to the other topics as I learnt how to use different apps and practiced doing simple effects and AR projects to help me to create my final Blipp. This specific research was better than finding out information but doing more practical research helped me to understand Augmented Reality. I did do primary and secondary research like I did with other units which was beneficial to understand what people thought of my idea and how to improve it.

After receiving some comments other people liked the amount of effort I put in and that the Blipp was visually pleasing. They thought that with more time I would have been able to explore more with the adobe after effects side of things. They also like the amount of research that I have done before hand to see how my idea and skills has progressed.
