Magazine Show

This morning is a daytime television programme which is on ITV on weekdays where they talk about  news, topical items, showbiz, style and beauty, home and garden, food, health, real life and more similar features. It is currently being presented by Philip Schofield and Holly Willoughby Monday to Thursday, with Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes on Friday. The show started 3 October 1988 making it one of the longest running daytime programmes on British television. There are currently 30 series with over 6,000 episodes. Many guests appear on the show to talk about stories including many celebrities over the years. The audience category would be D and E because of when it is on so only the unemployed and unskilled would be watching. The structure of this

Good Morning Britain is a breakfast programme, shown on weekdays 6am till 8.30 am on ITV. It was launched on 28 April 2014, after Daybreak was cancelled. In Autumn 2017 the show got around 700,000 views even though the programme previously struggled in the ratings. There has been various main presenters which included Susanna Reid, Ben Shephard, Charlotte Hawkins and Sean Fletcher in 2014, but beginning of of 2018 Reid and Shephard became the two main hosts. Hawkins then read the news whilst Fletcher was the sports editor and presented the sports news. Currently, Piers Morgan is presenting whilst Kate Garraway is a newsreader on Thursday's and a co-host on Friday's. The audience category would be D and E because of the time that it is on and the rest of the people would be at work.

Loose Women is a British television programme that has been broadcasted on ITV since 1999. The programme was originally broadcast from Norwich but since moved to London where there is a panel of four female presenters, who interview celebrities, discuss their lives and topical issues, ranging from politics and current affairs to celebrity gossip. They often have guests on the show to have discussions and talk about issues. The current anchor presenters are Ruth Langsford, Andrea Mclean and Christine Lampard, but often have other presenters joining them. It has now got over 3,000 episodes with 23 series. â€‹The audience type for this would be the D and E category because loose women is on during the day so it would have to be people who are free throughout the day.

Audience Categories & Target Markets

Having a target audience is very important when creating any type of media, if there is no audience then there is no point in going further, because without one then the producers won't earn money, and there won't be many viewers. The audience are the group of people who are going to watch it and make some sort of sense from it. There is a lot of research going into this including questionnaires, focus groups, and comparison of existing media texts, to see if there is going to be anyone interested and more specifically who. The producers want to know the income bracket, age, gender, race and location., which is known as demographics.

Screen Shot 2018-09-26 at 11.17.33.png

There are 4 different types of marketing segmentation which are:

Demographic- Includes gender, age wage, career, and education

Behavioural- behaviour, usage, and decision making

Psychographic- attitudes, values, religion, and lifestyles

Geographic- addresses, location, climate, region

These are looked at when trying looking at the target audiences so they know who to market their type of media at.

After creating a questionnaire I sent it to people in college who are the target audience I then got them to fill this out, and I collected the responses. The question "What traits do you think are required to become a celebrity" got a range of responses, which includes confidence, good looking, hardworking, and to stand out from others. Another question that got a range of responses was "do you dream of being famous?" 45% said maybe, 27% said yes and 27% said no. This shows that more people are unsure if they want to be famous, then there are people who have decided if they want to or not. Equal amount of people said yes as they did no, making this question is quite close in terms of teenagers dreaming of being famous. We asked "what is your opinion on the Kardashians?" being thought that they were either entertaining/dramatic, boring/overrated or fake. These opinions are the most common and it seems that people either love them or hate them, and the results seemed quite mixed. "Do you think celebrities influence people?" this question 100% said yes, making it clear that everyone thinks that they do. The next question was is this good or bad? These responses were quite varied most people saying both as it depends on who it is. There was 1 that said good and 1 that says bad, showing the majority of people say it depends on who the person is. "Do you have a celebrity role model?" 54.3% said no and 45.5% said yes showing that it is close but more people don't have a role model then people who do. If you do have then who, was the next question, the responses included Chris Evans, Morgan Freeman and Tommy Robinson. "where do you read about celebrities?" these responses mostly included social media like twitter, in the newspaper, online or on the news on television. These responses don't surprise me because teenagers spend a lot of time on their phones so reading about celebrities on social media is going to be common. "Are you interested in celebrity news" 73% said yes and 27% said that they aren't. This shows that the majority of teenagers are interested in celebrity news. This again doesn't shock me because people find it interesting to read about. "Do you think celebrities influence you?" 5 people said that they do and 6 people said no. These results are quite close but more people aren't influenced then the people that are. "Do you think the attitudes of celebrities have changed over time?" 64% said yes 18% said no and 18% said maybe. This shows that the majority of people agree that attitudes of celebrities have changed. And the other 36% said that either no or maybe.  "Do you think the attitudes towards celebrities have changed over time?" 55% said that the have, 27% said no and 18% said maybe. This shows that just over half said they have changed and the others either don't think they have or maybe they have. These results are again quite varied, but overall the attitudes towards celebrities have changed. Overall, some of the results are similar and some are varied. From this questionnaire I can see what teenagers different opinions are of celebrities and can use this information when creating the magazine show.

Celebrities using their platforms for good:

Get ready to see tennis star Serena Williams as you’ve never seen her before. Williams, who’s recently been plagued with controversy following her emotionally charged 2018 U.S. Open loss, is stepping up to support October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a video that shows off one of her lesser-known talents. The sports pro has gone totally topless for a promotional video, in which she sings an acappella version of “I Touch Myself”, as part of the I Touch Myself Project.

Nearer the time I will look into celebrity news and that could be talked about on the show. I could talk about the different celebrities using their platforms for good and then celebrities that are controversial, like the Kardashian's. I will get responses from the questionnaire and analyse the feedback so that I can see what peoples opinions are, making sure that the feedback is from the target audience.

From this primary and secondary research I can now go on to plan how I want to present this information in the magazine show. We could interview some teenagers about what they think about the research we did including the results and see if they are shocked by any of the results, and get there opinions on it. We could also have the presenters discussing the effect that celebrities have on young people and if they think that it is good or bad. This could include a debate and we could talk about controversial celebrities like Justin Bieber and the Kardashians as people have lots of different opinions on these people. Some of the information that we found out from the questionnaires could be spoken about to see what peoples reactions are to more of the shocking results that we gathered. We could discuss celebrity news that is causing a lot of attention, but this changes all the time so we would have to do more research into this part closer to the time when we film. We could include vox popping to see what other peoples opinions are on certain celebrities and if they think that they have a good or bad influence to people. Having peoples different opinions could then lead to a discussion between the people on the panel about how celebrities actions impact and influence teenagers.

Vox popping

Vox popping is when an interviewer goes by and asks the general questions some questions about a specific topic. It's aim is to get the public's opinion. Their responses are presented as a reflection of a popular opinion. It is important to not lead them to a specific answer and always give open ended questions so that a more interesting response. Including vox popping makes the magazine show more interesting to see what the general publics thoughts and opinions are on the topic. This can then lead to other discussions and debates.

I used the same questions on the Google form and printed out them out for the target audience to answer which were the majority of the people in my class. The forms were then filled out and given back to me. This type of primary research is a focus group, as I handed the questionnaires out to people who the magazine show is aimed at, rather than the online questionnaire which is open for anyone to access.  All of the answers to "Do you think the attitudes of celebrities have changed over time?' said that they have. This is similar to the results I got from the online questionnaire but there were still some people said either no or maybe, but from this it shows that overall the majority of 15-19 year olds think that attitudes of celebrities have changed. There are similar results for the next question as well, which is "do you think attitudes towards celebrities have changed over time?" From the questionnaires I handed out everyone said that attitudes have changed. This is similar, to the other primary research but not all the answers were a yes. For the next question 5 people said that they don't have a role model, and some of the people who said yes their role model is David Beckham, David Tennant, a Youtuber, and Lily James. "Do celebrities influence you?" 6 people said that they don't and 3 people said yes. These are more of a mixed result but the majority of people still are not influenced by celebrities. 3 people said that they are interested in celebrity news and the other 6 people are not. This does not correlate to the other primary research that I did where the majority of people said that they are interested. This could be because I am addressing the target audience more in this so therefore it is more accurate. "where do you read about celebrities?" these answers were quite similar and answers included newspaper, social media, magazines and radio which is similar to the other questionnaire. "what is your opinion on the Kardashians?" these results varied again some said they were interesting and entertaining, whilst others thought that they were annoying and were uninterested in them. "Do you think celebrities influence people" all the answers said that they  do influence people but if this is a good or bad way has varied answers. Some said both and that it depends on which celebrity. "Do you dream of being famous" majority said no, some are unsure and only a few said yes. These mixed results match with the other research as that was also varied. The last question was the different traits required to become a celebrity were also similar to the other questionnaire, and the answers included confidence, ambition and intelligence. Overall, some of these results are similar to the other research but other are surprisingly very different, I will take both lots of research into consideration but will focus more on using this information as I know that the specific target audience answered these questions.

Pre-production paperwork

I had to complete the pre-production paperwork that is relevant to the magazine show, which includes a hazard assessment, equipment prices, an activity log, running order, script this is useful so that I am prepared for when I film. I was able to plan out what I had to do so that I was ready and organised for filming. I found out how much it would be, the risks involved, where it would be filmed,  and the order in which the topics will be filmed. By doing this it has helped for when we film as we will be able to get the task done smoothly and accurately.

Vox popping questions

Do you think attitudes towards celebrities have changed?

What is your opinion on the Kardashians?

Do you think celebrities are a good or bad influence and why?

What traits do you think is required to become a celebrity?

We went out and interviewed people, asking the questions above. We got about 6 responses and then edited it using premiere pro. We only used the ones that had the best responses to make it more interesting. We got these people top fill out permission forms for them to be in our show.

Proposal

We are working with the class to make a magazine show aimed towards an audience of 16 to 19 year olds. This show will cover issues such as current topics, drugs, sex, celebrities, sports and more. The both of us are covering the topic of celebrities; but rather than news, we will be discussing people’s opinions on them and how they affect the world.  We did primary and secondary research to find out people’s opinions. From this we were able to analyse the results and include the information in our part of the show. We spent a lot of time collecting the research and analyzing it, as we knew that it was important to make sure that all of the information we give in our segment of the show is true. We created online questionnaires and focus groups as well as research online to gather all the relevant information that we needed.  We are also going to be including vox popping to see what other people’s opinions are and we will be talking about this on the show. We will be filming this in the studio on a sofa where both of us will present. We decided not to have any guests on the show as the main focus will be on the research we gathered and the public’s reactions and opinions. To do our vox popping, we to make sure the people we interviewed had signed a permission slip so we could put them in our show. Another precaution we took was to find a safe place to film. It was cold and wet outside so we decided to film inside so they were comfortable, because if they were cold they may have rushed their answers just to finish the interview quickly. We completed the relevant pre-production paperwork, which included a risk assessment, location report, running order, script, rate card and activity log.

Final video

Evaluation

This is our final section of the magazine show. We filmed our part in the studio using two cameras and the shotgun microphones. The audio still didn't come out too good so after editing the footage together including the vox popping I then edited the audio in audition, so that the volume of the clips were all the same level. The lighting of the cameras were also different so I had to edit this in premiere Pro, however this still is not the exact same colour as the other clips . After doing this our part of the show was complete. Overall I think we could have learnt the script more, so that we could look at the camera more making it look professional. I think this part needed the most improving so that there was more of a flow of the clips. I think that I applied the primary and secondary research to the script well, as we including some of the results from these. By completing the research before hand helped hugely to the script, it gave us a lot to talk about making it more interesting the audience. Analysing the responses made us more knowledgable and gave us a talking point in the show. I edited the vox popping and used the most interesting responses in our video. If we had more time I would have wanted to film some more vox popping as some of the responses were not very interesting. I would have also wanted more so that there are more variety in the vt rather than hearing the same peoples opinions. We could have also included a guest to make it more interesting as it could be quite repetitive to just have the vox popping, however overall I think that our part of the magazine show came out well. We applied all our knowledge and research to create an interesting script and show for 15 to 19 year olds to watch.
